Hesselbjerggaard is 38 Ha. We do Nature conservation/meat production with Cattle and Sheeps. We are situated in the middle of the National Park. We have Fruit production (Apples, Cherries, Pears, Blueberries, Rasberries etc) and we produce Vegetables, both in a big green house and free range. We also produce eggs. Some of the products are sold from the farm, others (meat) is delivered to Supermarkets, and others to local shops and restaurants.
There are 4 families with small children living on the farm. We have guests - schools and companies coming to see, taste and learn what organic farming is all about. We have som tourist activities during the summer, including AirBnB rentals and canooing for rent.
The farm is 35 km from Copenhagen, and 10 km from Roskilde in the middle of Zeeland. Busses and trains will take you to town on a regular basis.
We are located close to rivers and lakes, and 6 km away there is a nice beach if you want to go swimming in the fjord.
Michael and Jessie are both full time working on the Farm. We ave good spece and positive experiences including wwoofers in the daily work
Organic methods: We produce our own compost from the Cattles Winter Manure. We try to keep the grass lands in good shape by regular shifts and a small number of animals.
Certifications: The Danish State Organic Certification Standard. In accordance with EU regulation for organic agriculture.
Current projects: I have just finished blueberry planting and the rasberry is also under way. watering and maintaining the different fruit productions is much of my time.
I am starting up the tourist season with guests, meals and Airbnb.

My stay at Hesselbjerggaard was generally very good. Jesse was always looking out for me. The residents of the community smiled and conversed with me whenever we saw each other. As for meals, WWOFFer was completely separate from the residents, but I had several opportunities to eat with them if I wanted to. Regarding the food, we were allowed to freely use what we could find on the farm, and it was very tasty!
However, there were two things that could be improved: First, the food situation. I had no problem with this, but the other WWOOFer seemed to feel uncomfortable asking Michael for help. Several times my ingredients were used without my permission. When I reported this to Michael, our fridge was filled with ingredients from that day on, so if this continues, I don't think it will be a problem from now on.Second, there was one day when Michael was not helpful with our questions. Michael always tells us that we can call him anytime and ask him questions, and on other days he actually does so in a friendly manner. But there was that one day when we tried to ask him a question and he responded, "The other woofer knows all about it," "I'm on the phone," "I have many other projects in progress for me," "Use your imagination," and so on. That one time was enough to make me nervous every time I asked a question after that. Those were my only two complaints. If these can be improved, I can recommend this farm.

I was looking forward to coming to Hesselbjerggaard with a friend... we were confirmed... and then we received an email just 12 days before we were supposed to start working on the farm, saying that because the last month had been very warm and dry the work was running out and that they were cancelling our stay. This was a huge shock. I know that farming depends so much on the climate and that things can change, but just 12 days before an international trip is not much time to try to change plans or find another farm; most are already booked. I wrote to ask if there was any chance of coming for at least a week so we would have more time to find another place, and got no reply.

Dear Deborah We were all sory at Hesselbjerggaard that we had to turn you down. Or both you and your friend as it was. But as I said there was a very good reason. In the period our area was in a very serious drought så all the berry picking and fruight processising dried out for us. So we didnt have the work we expected. Wwofing is not a free lunch for the farm. It is a learning proces based on real needed work. Cost for food etc, has to be balanced. I tried to explain our situation, but aparently not clearly enough. This is a lesson for me.

Merci !

They were the best hosts I've ever known in these four years of wwoofing.
The place is beautiful and Michael and Birgitte are wonderful people, cultured, friendly. They made me feel immediately at ease. We had a great time together, had lunch and dinner and had a lot of fun talking about it. The work is not at all heavy and my accommodation is very comfortable.
A highly recommended host
