Boarding school with sustainable self-sufficiency for 170 students
North Denmark
Hello dear wwoofer and thank you for your interest in our place
Our farmer Maria has been a wwoofing at New Zealand, in Latinamerica and Europe for several years before she was employed at the school to run our farm.
Learn to grow your own vegetables using the no-dig system. All of our food travel very few yards before it ends in our professionel kitchen preparing food for our 150 students and 30 employees.
These methods make it possible to grow in harmony with the earth and even reestablish the fertility in the soil.
We seek people to help us with the garden.
Examples of tasks:
Vegetables: Seeding, planting, weeding, harvesting and packing everything for the kitchen, kicthen-tasks.
Animals: Feeding the chickens, rabbits and collets eggs.
In return you will get lessons in the organic and no-dig method, outside and in greenhouses.
It is important to us that people have a true interest in self sufficiency and have a willingness to learn and work with young people (15 to 17 years)
People with good spirit, positive attitude and of course an engagement in our place and the methods we use are more than welcome here. We are non-smokers and will prefer you are as well.
We welcome vegetarians and vegans who come to learn, but you need to respect that we slaughter our own livestock and sometimes talk about it.
You work 5 hours a day 5-6 days a week and have 1-2 day off. So there is plenty of time each day to get out and see the country. You can borrow one of our bikes.
It is different what time of day you start, as it depends on the task you have to do.
You have free wifi and a room in the house or in a tipi and five meals a day. Feel free to ask questions.
Organic methods: We use the organic metode.
Certifications: no, We dont sell our products
When you are here. we try to get you involved both in the field and in the kitchen. so you both help produce the vegetables and the meat and help transform it into delicious food in the kitchen for the studens in the school. if you have the opportunity to be here 1-2 months or more, you will have the opportunity to try many of the skills, and see coherence in our place. if you are here for a short time, there will also be many things you can learn.

I had a great time at the Himmerlands boarding school! Maria is a lovely and attentive host, and there was a good variety of tasks to do both on the farm and in the kitchen (we harvested a lot, planted seedlings, made the beds ready for winter). There were plenty of breaks and the food was great! The accommodation was in a WWOOFer house, which was lovely -- a good kitchen, cozy living room and comfy beds for sleeping. The other staff / teachers were friendly and open, though often the conversation would happen in Danish which sometimes made me feel a bit excluded.

Thank you for this wonderful week on your farm. We learnt a lot of things and the atmosphere was so nice. We played Ticket to ride, ate a lot of very typical Danish food and had fun with the students. We already want to come back...!

I loved my experience at Himmerlands Boarding School!
I only got to spend a short time with the students since I was there during the October holidays, but from what I saw, the school’s atmosphere is amazing, with super nice teachers and students.
I really enjoyed working in the garden, where there’s a great variety of vegetables. The tasks ranged from taking care of the animals to harvesting and preparing vegetables for the school kitchen, as well as doing different jobs to get the garden ready for winter.
Maria is super friendly and welcoming, always happy to share her knowledge.
The food and accommodation are of great quality.
I wish I could have stayed longer and I’d go back without hesitation! :)

What à wonderful stay at Himmerland Boarding School! You can not dream of a better place for your wwoofing experience : the amazing and big garden has a lot of different kind of vegetables, allowing you to go through different tasks during the day (harvesting, weeding, planting, pruning,... ) . The regular breaks make the time goes by very quickly, and my only regret was that my stay was too short.
I loved talking with Maria, who is always eager to share her endless knowledge about permaculture, and working together with the other volunteers was a real pleasure : team work is always more enjoyable and productive :)
The accommodation is very cosy, clean and spacious. And the different opportunities the school offers as after-work activities are huge! Ceramics, painting, woodcraft, music, cinema, gym,,... there's definitely something for everybody! And if you just like chilling and reading a book, there are hamacs and a peaceful garden to welcome you!
I will always remember the friendly staff and their warm welcome, they helped me feel like home since the very fist day. So thank you to all of you, and I'd recommend thid place a 100 % to all of you future Wwoofers !

The school is beautifully located in the heart of Himmerland, offering a calm and inspiring atmosphere. As an adult, it was a unique and enriching experience to return to school life and gain insight into the Danish educational system and teaching culture, while getting to know the dedicated teachers, students, and the entire school staff. Working and having conversations with both students and teachers provided valuable opportunities to build meaningful human connections and understand the everyday rhythm of Danish school life. A special highlight was participating in honey extraction together – the school garden now hosts beehives, and beekeeping has become a natural part of the learning experience. This not only enhances practical skills but also strengthens environmental education. The school places great emphasis on healthy and conscious eating. A portion of the ingredients used in meals comes directly from the school's own garden, making the food fresh, pesticide-free, and low in carbon footprint. Moreover, the kitchen is highly flexible and professional in meeting all kinds of dietary needs – including vegetarian, vegan, lactose-free, and gluten-free diets – ensuring every student receives nutritious meals tailored to their requirements. Various types of vegetables are cultivated visibly in the school garden, making this an ideal place for those who enjoy working with plants and wish to learn more about sustainable food production within a dynamic educational community

My stay at Himmerlands Ungdomsskole was the best three months of my life!! I loved the variety of tasks, from working in the garden and caring for the animals to helping in the kitchen, where everyone was incredibly friendly. I learned so much from this experience, surrounded by the best people I could have hoped for. Ida is an amazing person who shared her knowledge with such joy. I already miss our conversations over French pancakes! Denmark is a beautiful country with wonderfully kind people, and the school is a fantastic place to live.
