Regenerative Farm Close to Copenhagen
Capital Region
"Hej WWOOFers" from Ross and Heather Jackson on our regenerative farm on the outskirts of Copenhagen, Denmark.
Ross is Danish/Canadian and the co-founder of The Global Ecovillage Network (GEN) and Gaia Education and has written several books on sustainability issues. Heather is English/Danish and is an artist and student of regenerative agriculture, she's also written books and is responsible for the daily farm management.
We began our forest gardening project in April 2023, and have dedicated 2.4 hectares to 800 edible nut trees (walnut, sweet chestnut, hazelnut) and fruit bushes. The rest of the farmland is now no-till pasture, re-wilded areas, a common biodynamic vegetable garden shared with 25 other families on half a hectare, our own gardens and greenhouse, two forested areas, a new "tiny forest" in the shape of a butterfly, a large barn with extensive farm machinery, a root cellar and many new hedgerows planted as wildlife habitat. There's a part-time helper called Jørn (George) who deals with the heavier jobs around the farm like driving the tractor. We also have beautiful facilities for our regular public meetings and art exhibitions. We currently live here with a naughty Jack Russell dog, five cats, three lakes which are now nature reserves, wild deer, foxes, hares, buzzards and geese. We're thinking of getting chickens once more later in the summer.
We've planted 1800 trees and bushes so far and these need tending, watering, fencing and eventually fruit picking. There's odd jobs around the farm which change with the seasons; but include feeding the hens, weeding, animal care, grass cutting, caring for the animals if we're out of town and general jobs about the farm. We're in the exciting process of designating and designing new areas of the farm for new projects in permaculture and re-wilding, this year we have a new idea to plant maize, beans and pumpkins using the "Three Sisters" method used by indigenous Americans for thousands of years. Also 8000m2 of the fields given over to wild flowers for insects, marigolds for cosmetics and sunflowers because they look so great! There's also generally plenty of interesting movers and shakers from the environmental movement visiting the farm or coming on tours.
2025 is a big year at the farm for us, as Ross co-founded the Global Ecovillage Network 30 years ago and Gaia Education 20 years ago. There will be many events coming up in 2025. So far we've planted our butterfly-shaped forest, we'll be filling it with daffodils to bloom in April and calendula for the summer months and "launching" it on the world in the spring of 2025. An art exhibition is also planned at the end of August and in addition Heather will be creating an immersive art experience plus music concert to celebrate Global Ecovillage Day on the 18th of October - there's plenty of jobs for artistic and social media savvy WWOOFers here!
At present we can offer two newly refurbished private bedrooms (one double bed for one or a couple, the other is two single beds for sharing) with access to a bathroom with shower plus two extra sleeping spaces with single beds and a curtain in-between, WWOOFers should be aware that rooms are often shared, but no mixing boys and girls (unless you're a couple or friends). The walls are thin in the annex, and the sun gets very bright in the Nordic summer, so bring ear plugs and eye masks if you're a light sleeper. You would also have your own kitchen access and seating area with wifi, a big screen and projector for movies, an extensive library, and a ping pong table. We provide the basic vegetarian or vegan food of course and many of our organic ingredients come from the farm or from the local area. Most meals are made by you in your own kitchen, but Heather is an excellent vegetarian cook and will provide suppers, soups and cakes now and then. In the spring and summer months the working day begins at 8:00 and ends at 13:00, your weekends are free. You'll keep your bedroom and common areas clean and tidy and give your bedroom a deep clean when you leave us. All WWOOFer's are expected to have their own insurance cover.
We love living in the countryside! We get up early and go to bed ridiculously early too, but the house and your annex is huge and you'd be quite private. We finally have good internet, so be sure to bring your laptop if required and a European adaptor if coming from elsewhere. Bring sunscreen, rubber boots (we have sizes 41 - 43 only) and strong work boots. We enjoy Heather's cooking and inviting friends, but other than the occasional workshop or meeting it's pretty quiet around here. Both Ross and Heather have large families which come visiting occasionally, and friends and neighbours who pass by regularly. We travel now and then, but always have someone home to look after the place and our furry friends. The farm is in the countryside but is also quite close to two small towns called Birkeroed (spelt Birkerød in Danish) and Farum, these you can easily cycle to (we have two electric bikes and three normal bikes that you can use - bring a cycle helmet!) or catch the bus and have their own train lines to Copenhagen, which is a journey of 30 minutes. It takes under an hour by train to the airport.

Ending my volunteering journey in Denmark at Heather’s place felt just right. The setting is beautiful, with the comfort of a private bedroom that makes you feel more like a guest than a volunteer. Heather herself is wonderfully kind, thoughtful, and a fantastic cook. As it was the end of the season, the workload was light and flexible. I could choose my own tasks, such as cleaning the chicken coop, harvesting maize and beans, picking flowers to dry, or watering the greenhouse.
Heather, thank you for your kindness and for making me feel completely at home.

My life in the farm was like a dream I had such a wonderful days that I never forget. Im in love with this farm and people I met there and of course all the lovely animals too! I'm greatful to Heather and Ross for accepting me to work their farm! Heather made the farm work more fun and enjoyable. I found farm job very rewarding every day. Also I could have very healthy life as I woke up early work early then finish work around 1pm and after that I just had nice relaxing time around the farm cycling and walking around the farm.
everyday i could eat organic vegitables from the farm and greenhouse. I never forget about the taste of the tomato! I learn lots about ecological farming and I really admire about Heather and Ross’s idea of how we coexist with nature and how we give the nature back to the animals and insects.
Heather is always helpful and care about wwoofers so much and she is very very sweet ,lovely , funny and very loving. As everyone mentioned Heather’s cooking is the best! I already miss everyone I met there and the farm.
Also the house is very clean and the rooms are very specious and you can have privacy. And farm is close enough to Copenhagen to explore the beautiful city museums and swimming lots of nice art!
Highly recommend working in Duemosegaard
I think this is the one of best choice I made in my life:)
Thank you so much Heather and Ross I miss you and the beautiful farm of course Harry too !the cats and Jørn ! I hope I can come back to the farm again

It was a wonderful trip, really.
This Wwoofing was full of kindness, humor, discoveries and generosity. The farm is huge and large but also warm and calm. No matter the weather, a day with Heather is always amazing. The other members of this little community of farmers are also very kind. This farm experiment a lot about ecological farming and hardly try to find a solution against the "traditionnal" agriculture problem.
During this Wwoofing we learned a lot about farming, agriculture, cooking and gardening, but what we will probably remember the most will be the human experience and all those moments spent with the host and the other wwoofers that we were able to meet.
The place is very pleasant and the view in the garden was so soothing. Moreover, Heather is a fantastic cook !
Our stay was short but unforgettable. It seems a little bit "cliché" but it's true !
Finally, the farm isn't so far from Copenhague and thanks to that we were able to visit many things! Museums and monuments for exemple.
And the farm is also close to the forest ! So the potential walks are also numerous and very cool !
We warmly recommand you this place.
Thank you again Heather and Ross for your kindness, your welcoming, your jokes, your teachings and your cook :) We spent a truely wonderful time and first wwoofing with you. Thank you.

During my one-month stay on the farm, I was very warmly welcomed. I appreciated the facilities, the good atmosphere, the food, the work to be done, and the kindness of the hosts. The proximity to the city of Copenhagen allowed me to visit it. I had an excellent stay and I keep very good memories of this experience.

What a special place! As a first-time WWOOFer who spent three weeks on the farm, I couldn’t have had a better experience. Volunteering at Duemosegaard is a wonderful opportunity to learn about organic regenerative farming through a variety of daily projects, connect with people from around the world, and relax in the beautiful Danish countryside. Even though I’d never worked on a farm before, we were taught how to do everything and it made the environment feel both easygoing and educational.
Heather is the best—so welcoming, hilarious, and a fantastic cook. Moreover, life on the farm is so peaceful: a stunning farmhouse, flowers everywhere, beautiful sunsets, and nearby walking and biking trails nearby to explore the area. Also many fun times with the other volunteers—cooking together, movie nights, and exploring Copenhagen.
Duemosegaard is such an interesting, exciting, and relaxing place to be, and I’m so grateful for my time here. Heather and Ross are so welcoming to all the volunteers, and I miss it already <3 Would highly recommend this experience!
